Biography - Pia MYrvoLD

Pia Myrvold is a Norwegian-born interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, sound, video, design, infrastructure design, performance, urbanism, and emerging technologies. Over a career of more than 35 years, she has developed a distinctive artistic philosophy that moves fluidly across disciplines, combining art, technology, and spatial experience.

Myrvold’s unconventional and cross-disciplinary research has introduced hybrid forms and pioneering concepts such as cybercouture.com, clothing as publishing, multi-surface artworks, and female interfaces. Her work explores the dualities between virtual and physical realities, often incorporating 3D animation, mapping, multi-screen installations, and interactive environments that challenge traditional definitions of painting, sculpture, and space.

She is the founder of the exhibition series The Metamorphoses of the Virtual, created as a platform for innovative large-scale installations and international collaboration among new media artists. The first edition was presented during the Venice Biennale in 2013 and was nominated by the Italian art press as the best parallel exhibition, attracting more than 28,000 visitors.

The second edition, The Metamorphoses of the Virtual 5 + 5, was presented at the K11 Art Foundation in Shanghai, featuring five French and five Chinese new media artists. The exhibition welcomed over 30,000 visitors and received critical attention from The New York Times.

Since the beginning of her career, Myrvold has also worked extensively as a producer and curator of international exhibitions and art events, including the interdisciplinary Sola International Art Festival in Norway (1986) and Enter This Way in Rome (1989).

In November 2014, she presented the solo project ART AVATAR at Centre Pompidou—an immersive and interactive exhibition bringing together ideas developed over two decades. The project merged interface design as an autonomous artwork, interaction, sensor systems, and 3D animation as both sculpture and painting into a unified multi-surface gesamtkunstwerk.

Pia Myrvold was born in Norway in 1960 and has been based in Paris and New York since 1992.
