PAINTING – TEXTILE - NEW TECHNOLOGY - INSTALLATION - PERFORMANCE

Pia Myrvold was born in Norway and has lived in Paris since 1992. An autodidakt artist and designer, she has worked professionally since 1980, when she established herself first as a painter with important exhibitions in Norway, and later with interdisciplinary projects in the realms of textile sculptures, video, performance, theatre, urban planning, interior design, fashion and architecture.

Her international debut came with the commission of a 500 meter long outdoor textile installation in the futuristic Parc de la Villette, Paris, 1992 commissioned by architect Bernard Tschumi and supported by The French Ministry of Culture.

Myrvold founded the concept “Clothes as Publishing” in 1996, exploring her ideas of merging art and ideas with fashion, and using fashion as a media for Expression. She created the domaine name cybercouture(dot)com, an interactive design platform that merged art content with digital printing on made to measure fashion designs.

Bergen Culture Capital 2000, invited Myrvold as the opening artist with a solo show Bergen Identity, in Vestlandske Kunstindustrimuseum, now Bergen Art Museum.

In 2004 she presented the smart textile projects “Female Interfaces” in Centre George Pompidou, with interface design and interactive clothes; where the performers push buttons and panels in the garments to activate sound and image loops, thus presenting models for creative action and thought.

In 2011 and 2013 MYrvoLD produced and curated the independent pavilion, FLOW - a work in motion and The Metamorphoses of the Virtual in Venice Biennale, the last nominated as best parallell by the Italian art press.

Created to emphasise the importance of new media art, these exhibitions travelled to Los Angeles LACDA, Toronto OCAD, the K11 Art Foundation Shanghai and PACE Beijing

Centre Pompidou invited MYrvoLD for the soloshow ART AVATAR; new technology, video and interactive interfaces for a 3 month exhibition in 2014, where she introduced the Virtual Mirror, and one for the first VR immersisive XR interfaces in art.

In 2015, Myrvold did ground bracking work with Hybrid Love, kinetic textile scultptures using 3 Kuka robots arms, in the Paris group show .

The same year she was invited by Snøhetta Architects, to create the large format MONUMENTAL Carpets in Clarion Energy Hotel, Stavanger.

New York Times, invited her as a key speaker for their conference Art for Tomorrow 2016, in Doha, Qatar. MYrvoLD’s entry in the first day program, was followed by Jeffrey Deitch, the famous New York Gallerist and recently director of the LACMA museum in Los Angeles. Among the star packed program we find Jeff Koons, Marina Ambramovic and the curator for the London Serpentine Gallery, Hans Ulrich Obrist

Consequently Sheika Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani of Doha and Qatar Art Museums, invited her to develop the project SUN TRUMPETS, sculpture installations with sun panels that follow the sun and announce the fist and last light of the day with sounds.

MYrvoLD has recently been nominated for the Opline Art Price in France by argentine artist Julio Le Parc.

In 2019, Myrvold presented TIME MACHINE, an independent pavillion during Venice Biennale and Giudecca Art District opening program.

In Skur 2, Stavanger, she set up TIME MACHINE II, and propsed several hybrid art projects and performances, continuing with the art and Identity project, started in 1994, with Paris Identity she started the preparations for a the performative art couture project, projected for her Jubilee 2020/2021, that will mark 40 years as an artist and 25 years as an international designer.

The title The Sumerians on Holiday, is in reference to the culture and early scripts and images of the Sumerians, with some historians dating from 10 000 to 300 000 years old. The scripts, talks of aliens visiting earth, introducing advanced technology, cloning and manipulations of the DNA, among many other familiar mythical stories, such as The Garden of Eden. The Sumerians are credited with inventing the future, the model and aspects of all modern civilisations. The collection will explore new techniques and target an experimental and investigative opportunity in the modern silhouette, not in relation to ordinary use or rational production of fashion, but as an art form equal to painting and sculpture, the eye is challenged in a sensual experience where a vector of information gives context to our present reality, past and future.

MYrvoLD use techniques such as digital printing, digital 3d printing, laser cut metal structures, biotechnology materials and digital smart technology. Manifestation of silhouettes will provide associations with ancient gods images, primitive tribal cultures, sci-fi and futuristic spacecraft and cyber-mechanical cyborgs and AI (artificial intelligence) aesthetics.

Pia Myrvold moved to Norway, Stavanger in 2022, and established the temporary pop up art studio The FLOOR, in an abandoned oilproduction company building. The project was perceived as a set design for the imaginary movie ‘The FLOOR - amulti research and interdisciplinary art production space’.
