Highlights 1980–1990

Pia MYrvoLD

Pia Myrvold has been an active artist since 1980. Her painting debut took place at the West Coast Exhibition of Norway and was followed in 1982 by participation in the State Exhibition at Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo.

The exhibitions highlighted here feature Myrvold as an artist, curator, and producer — at times working in one or all three capacities.

As a curator and producer, Myrvold has encouraged and supported numerous artists in exhibitions around the world, guided by a sense of necessity — an urgency to communicate ideas beyond the consensus of established institutional frameworks.

Her major 1980s achievement remains the Sola International Art Festival (1986), organised on the beach near Stavanger, Norway’s petroleum capital. Over 30 international artists were invited to present installations, performances, and video works. Among them, Bill Viola had his first presentation in Norway. Other participating artists included Kjartan Slettemark and Holy Toy.

In 1989, she curated and produced the exhibition Enter This Way, presenting Norwegian sculpture and installation at Sala 1, Rome, with artists Kjell Erik Killi Olsen, Ellen Bang, Michael O’Donnell, and co-producer Randy Naylor. Her installation won First Prize for best sculpture installation in Rome that year.
