Introduction to Work with Sculpture and Installation
Pia MYrvoLD
Since her debut as a painter in 1980 in coastal Norway, Pia Myrvold has evolved into a prominent figure in the realm of three-dimensional works. Her artistic practice is characterised by a hybrid approach, seamlessly integrating various disciplines such as textiles, painted wood, and recycled objects.
Myrvold's innovative use of materials includes video screens and light sources, which explore the dynamic interplay of light and shadow. Furthermore, the kinetic elements of her works, energised by wind, water, solar power, or human interaction, reflect a commitment to sustainability and audience engagement.
In 2011, Myrvold broke new ground by introducing a series of VR sculptures that examined the potential of sculpture as an animated form. These works were showcased during her solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale, titled FLOW - Works in Motion. To create an immersive experience, she designed structures like Star Gate and Video Spiral, which provided a multifaceted viewing experience. These physical installations not only engaged viewers but also facilitated a new discourse through digital mapping tools displayed on multiple screens.
Pia Myrvold's sculptural practice transcends traditional boundaries, blending immersive environments, digital interface design, and ephemeral installations. Her works embody community and social sculpture while embracing technological innovations, as seen in projects like Syn-Energy and Hybrid Love. Myrvold's explorations are further detailed in her various initiatives, including Scripts, Textile Art, The Great Recycle, and Extended Reality, highlighting her diverse and progressive approach to contemporary sculpture and installation art.
Pia MYrvoLD is a member of the Norwegian Sculptors Association.
